JONATHAN LOWNDES IN YE PALL MALL, (LONDON). A WILLIAM AND MARY EBONY VENEERED GILT BRASS MOUNTED BASKET TOP BRACKET CLOCK CIRCA 1685 the highly decorative unusually small embossed floral scrollwork basket with double-sided dolphin's head folding handle and red fabric lining, small gilt urn finials and applied brass fretwork panels to the front door; glazed sides and back door and moulded plinth base set on shallow gilt bun feet. 6.5-inch brass dial with fine gilded winged cherub's head spandrels, silvered chapter ring with inner quarters markers and matted centre with date box above below a Strike/Not Strike lever; blued steel hands and signed to the bottom edge "Jonathan Lowndes in ye Pall Mall". The double fusee gut wound movement with stop work, five reversed ringed tapering baluster pillars and verge escapement with heart-shaped back cock, bob pendulum, hour strike and pull repeat on a further bell; the profusely engraved tulip backplate with similarly signed centre cartouche.

Jonathan Lowndes (Loundes) is recorded as a celebrated clockmaker working in Pall Mall in the last quarter of the 18th century. He was a member of the Clockmakers’ Company from 1680 to 1710 and was Steward in 1696
