FINNEY, LIVERPOOL. A GEORGE II FIGURED MAHOGANY MUSICAL LONGCASE CLOCK the case having a swan neck pediment and pierced sound fret above a glazed door with brass capped corinthian columns and matching canted corners on a slender trunk with shaped top crossbanded door and brass capped reeded quarter columns on canted box base with applied crossbanded panel on later bracket feet. The 13" arched brass dial with gilt brass four-season spandrels and broad silvered chapter ring surrounding a matted and engraved centre with sliding Strike/Chime aperture and two silvered subsidiary dials for tune selection and quarters, sweeping centre seconds and concentric calendar. The arch enclosing a rolling moonphase fronting an eight-day weight driven three train movement with horizontal pin barrel and deadbeat escapement chiming one of seven tunes each day on thirteen bells and striking the hours on a larger bell.

Joseph Finney (1708-d.1772) was Liverpool's leading clock, watch and scientific instrument maker at a time when the city was second only to London in its importance as a port and centre for the industry. Patronised by George 111 he was made a Freeman of Liverpool in 1732, appeared in the city's first trade directory and even boasted his own coat of arms.
