A FINE LATE 17TH CENTURY EBONY VENEERED ORMOLU MOUNTED QUARTER REPEATING BRACKET CLOCK the caddy top surmounted by a hinged handle above a glazed door with pierced sound fret and scrollwork mounts enclosing a 7" square brass dial with wheatear engraved border, gilt cherub head spandrels and silvered engraved chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals surrounding a matted centre with ringed winding hole and calendar aperture fronting an eight-day fusee movement with five finned knopped pillars, verge escapement and double pull quarter repeat on two bells, foliate engraved backplate signed 'John Knibb, Oxford' 38cm high handle down - John Knibb (1650-1722) was a member of the famous Knibb family of clockmakers. He worked as an apprentice to his brother Joseph in Oxford c.1664 where they were clockmakers to Kings Charles II and James II. When Joseph moved to London, John took charge of the Oxford business and received the Freedom of the City in 1673.
