PETER LITHERLAND, LIVERPOOL. A RARE GILT PAIR CASED POCKET WATCH WITH RACK LEVER ESCAPEMENT, plain outer case enclosing a white enamelled dial with Roman numerals and 15-second subsidiary dial fronting a chain driven fusee movement with rack lever escapement, the back plate signed and numbered 731. - Peter Litherland took out a patent for this type of escapement in 1792. The escape wheel made four revolutions a minute hence we see the second hand revolving on the subsidiary every 15 seconds.
