BENJAMIN MERRIMAN LONDON. A WILLIAM & MARY EBONY VENEERED GILT BRASS BASKET TOP EIGHT DAY TABLE CLOCK WITH PULL QUARTER REPEAT CIRCA 1690 the ornate chased and pierced top with finely cast folding double S scroll handle and bulbous corner finials above a glazed case with brass fret-cut mounts and raised on shallow bun feet. The 7“ brass dial with winged cherub head spandrels and silvered Roman chapter ring with half-hour markers enclosing a matted centre with ringed winding holes, mock pendulum aperture and ornamented date box, with original blued steel hands and strike/not strike lever above the XII. The substantial double fusee key wound eight-day movement with five finned ringed baluster pillars, verge escapement and hour strike on a single bell; with a sprung pull quarter repeat mechanism on a nest of four further bells. Highly ornamented fine scroll engraved backplate signed Benj. Merriman, London externally mounted with detailed winding click-work and with a highly ornamented engraved and pierced shaped back cock.
